When will Aspen Airport close, and what is confirmed?
The published closure schedule covers most of spring, summer and fall 2027. It was announced in May 2026 and remains on the airport’s current closure page; this is a planning update, not a claim that the closure was newly announced today. Aspen/Pitkin County Airport ↗
| Milestone | Airport’s published plan |
|---|---|
| Closure begins | April 4, 2027, at 11 p.m. Mountain Time |
| Scheduled reopening | November 19, 2027, at 7 p.m. Mountain Time |
| Affected flying | Commercial and general aviation, including private jets |
These are scheduled project dates. Before committing to a flight near either boundary, have the operating carrier verify the latest airport notices and operating status. A reopening target should not be treated as an unconditional landing commitment. Aspen/Pitkin County Airport ↗
Why is the airport closing?
The closure allows the existing runway to be reconstructed and shifted as part of airport modernization. The airport says the work will bring the runway into compliance with current FAA standards. Aspen/Pitkin County Airport ↗
The runway reopening and the new terminal’s completion are separate milestones. According to the airport’s current FAQ, commercial passengers will continue using the existing terminal after the runway reopens; the new terminal is anticipated in 2029. A November 2027 runway reopening does not mean the entire redevelopment is finished. Aspen/Pitkin County Airport ↗
For a charter customer, the practical consequence is a change to the trip’s airport and ground journey. The operating carrier still needs to assess the proposed aircraft, load and conditions at whichever alternative is selected.
Which airports could private jet travelers use instead?
Start by comparing Rifle and Eagle County with the operator, then consider other regional gateways if they fit the itinerary better. Aspen One’s destination update identifies Rifle for private aviation and lists Eagle County, Grand Junction, Montrose and Denver as alternatives for reaching the region. Aspen One, Aspen Chamber Resort Association and Snowmass Tourism ↗
| Alternative | Why include it in the comparison? | What to confirm for your trip |
|---|---|---|
| Rifle Garfield County Airport — RIL | An alternative specifically identified for private aviation in the destination update. | Aircraft acceptance, handling, parking and a ground vehicle for passengers and bags. |
| Eagle County Regional Airport — EGE | A regional alternative with a private aviation terminal operated by Signature Aviation. Signature Aviation ↗ | The exact terminal, handling arrangements and onward pickup. |
| Grand Junction Regional Airport — GJT | Another airport named in the destination’s alternative-access plan. | Whether the complete flight and road itinerary meets your arrival deadline. |
| Montrose Regional Airport — MTJ | A further regional option to include when comparing proposals. | Operator suitability, ground routing and the practical return schedule. |
| Denver International Airport — DEN | A gateway listed by the destination for visitors combining flights and a road transfer. | The exact airport quoted and total door-to-door time; a Denver-area charter proposal may use a different airport. |
Our comparison is a planning shortlist, not a ranking or a promise of available aircraft. Ask each provider to use the same passenger count, baggage details and arrival deadline so the proposals can be compared fairly.
Rifle’s official airport page separately notes that airport landing charges and FBO charges are distinct. Request the full handling and airport-cost breakdown rather than assuming the hourly flight rate covers every item. Rifle Garfield County Airport ↗
How should travelers plan the drive to Aspen?
Treat the ground transfer as part of the charter itinerary from the first quote. A flight that reaches an alternative airport on time can still miss the purpose of the trip if the road journey, vehicle or pickup arrangements have not been worked out.
- Give the provider the actual Aspen or Snowmass destination address and the latest useful arrival time.
- Confirm the pickup location, vehicle capacity, child-seat needs, pets and luggage space with the ground transport provider.
- Ask the driver which route is suitable for the travel date and how road conditions or construction could change the journey.
- Arrange the return transfer as well as the arrival, including the meeting point and a buffer before the flight.
Published drive times are starting estimates, not guarantees. For an event, wedding or meeting with a fixed start, compare the whole journey and consider arriving earlier. Our Aspen charter guide covers the destination-level planning questions; the ASE airport guide explains normal airport-fit considerations outside the closure window.
Can a helicopter bypass the airport closure?
ASE itself will also be closed to helicopter traffic during construction, according to the airport’s FAQ. The same guidance directs helicopter operators to contact Glenwood Springs or Rifle about parking availability. It does not establish a bookable transfer into Aspen. Aspen/Pitkin County Airport ↗
If a proposal includes a helicopter segment, obtain the actual landing location, permissions, operator acceptance and onward transport details in writing. Do not assume that changing aircraft type restores access to a closed airport.
What should a 2027 Aspen charter quote include?
A useful proposal names the alternative airport and prices the itinerary you will actually use. Our recommendation is to settle these points before comparing totals or making a nonrefundable travel commitment.
- The exact airports in both directions, operating carrier, aircraft category and any substitution terms.
- Passenger and baggage acceptance, including oversized equipment and pets where relevant.
- Airport and handling charges, parking, positioning, crew costs and any other conditional fees.
- Who arranges and pays for ground transfers, and what happens if flight or road conditions disrupt the connection.
- Change and cancellation terms if the airport’s published reopening schedule changes.
The closure alone does not establish how much a particular charter will cost or whether capacity will be unavailable. Compare current written proposals. Our booking checklist and charter cost guide explain how to compare the underlying terms.
For travelers starting in the New York area, use the New York–Aspen route guide as background, then request a quote using an airport available on the actual travel dates. An earlier ASE route estimate is not a confirmed price for an alternative itinerary.
Will Aspen and Snowmass remain open during the closure?
Yes. Aspen One, Aspen Chamber Resort Association and Snowmass Tourism said in their May 29 destination update that local lodging, businesses and event venues would remain open during the airport closure. Visitors should still confirm individual bookings and event arrangements. Aspen One, Aspen Chamber Resort Association and Snowmass Tourism ↗
The destination remains accessible; the arrival plan changes. Recheck the airport’s official closure page when booking and again before departure, and ask the operator to confirm the latest operational information for the actual flight.
