What are semi-private flights?
Semi-private flights sell individual seats, while a conventional private charter sells exclusive use of an aircraft for an agreed itinerary. On a shared service, other passengers can book the remaining seats and the provider sets the departure schedule.
Treat “semi-private” as a description of the travel experience and check the actual product behind it. JSX identifies its seats as public charters sold by JetSuiteX, Inc., with flights operated by Delux Public Charter, LLC doing business as JSX Air. JSX ↗
A smaller terminal can be attractive to a solo traveler, couple, or family who wants a simpler airport experience without funding the whole aircraft. If cabin privacy or a custom departure is essential, start with the private jet charter guide.
What is it like to fly semi-private with JSX?
JSX’s published experience centers on dedicated hangars, a 30-seat cabin, included Starlink Wi-Fi, complimentary snacks and drinks, and baggage returned beside the aircraft. Its experience page also states that the cabin has no overhead bins. JSX ↗

The attraction is practical: fewer terminal logistics and a smaller group boarding the aircraft. The trade-off is that your seat still belongs to a shared flight on a fixed schedule. Evaluate the airport, departure time, and fare conditions together before deciding the experience is worth paying more for.
- Start with the route. A convenient nonstop is more useful than a premium experience that sends you out of your way.
- Check the aircraft shown for your flight. Cabin descriptions and fleet announcements do not guarantee a particular aircraft assignment.
- Plan your cabin essentials. Confirm where your personal item, laptop, medication, and other items needed during the flight will go.
Our assessment is based on published provider information, not firsthand flight testing. We consider JSX worth shortlisting when its terminal and timetable simplify the journey you already need to take.
Does Slate Aviation offer semi-private flights?
Slate Aviation, found at FlySlate.com, sells individual seats on shared shuttle flights. Its website markets by-the-seat travel between South Florida, New York, Nantucket, and the Hamptons. Check the live schedule for the airport pair and date you need; a destination listing does not mean year-round service on every route. Slate Aviation ↗
Slate’s shuttle page describes refurbished CRJ-200 aircraft with up to 18 seats, private-terminal departures, Gogo Avance L5 Wi-Fi, and dining served by cabin attendants. These are published service descriptions; confirm the aircraft, terminal, and amenities for your selected departure. Slate Aviation ↗
Our assessment: shortlist Slate for a Northeast–South Florida trip when its schedule and ground transfers fit. Compare the total seat price, any membership or nonmember charges, baggage limits, and cancellation terms. Buying a shuttle seat gives you a shared flight; Slate’s whole-aircraft charter and ownership offerings are separate products. Slate Aviation ↗

How do JSX, Slate, Aero, and Tradewind compare?
Compare semi-private providers by available route, aircraft, and fare conditions before comparing amenities. JSX, Slate Aviation, Aero, and Tradewind illustrate different versions of buying a seat on a shared service.
| Provider | Published aircraft or experience | When to investigate | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|---|
| JSX | A published 30-seat experience with dedicated hangars. JSX ↗ | A listed city pair and departure time that fit your trip. | Actual aircraft, terminal, fare rules, and baggage allowance. |
| Slate Aviation | An up-to-18-seat CRJ-200 shuttle experience with private terminals, Wi-Fi, and dining. Slate Aviation ↗ | An available Northeast–South Florida route or seasonal departure. | Exact airports, operating dates, total seat price, and membership terms. |
| Aero | Its fleet includes a 16-seat ERJ-135, 12-passenger Gulfstream IV, and 13-passenger Legacy 600. Aero ↗ | A premium scheduled jet service on an available route. | Aircraft assigned to that departure and the fare’s refund conditions. |
| Tradewind Aviation | Scheduled Pilatus PC-12 service with 8 forward-facing seats. Tradewind Aviation ↗ | A regional trip in its Northeast, Bahamas, or Caribbean network. | The PC-12 is a turboprop; check the schedule and baggage fit. |
Aero publishes both scheduled seats and whole-aircraft charter options. A charter request outside its route map is a different purchase from a seat on an existing flight. Aero ↗
Tradewind also offers ticket books and options to privatize certain scheduled flights under specific program terms. Do not assume that buying one scheduled seat creates a private booking. Tradewind Aviation ↗
How much do semi-private flights cost?
Semi-private fares are priced per seat and vary by route, date, and fare conditions. JSX’s advertised examples below show a dated snapshot, not a market average or a fare guaranteed to remain available. JSX ↗
| JSX route | Advertised departure | One-way fare from, USD |
|---|---|---|
| Burbank (BUR) to Las Vegas (LAS) | October 11, 2026 | $169 |
| Orange County (SNA) to Las Vegas (LAS) | October 19, 2026 | $179 |
| Dallas (DAL) to Miami (OPF) | December 19, 2026 | $569 |
JSX says displayed fares are collected within the preceding 48 hours and may no longer be available when you book. Optional products and services can add charges. These examples do not establish a usual JSX fare or a price range for Slate, Aero, or Tradewind. JSX ↗
Compare outbound and return seat fares × travelers + parking or transfers + any baggage, pet, and other charges. Add a hotel night if the schedule creates one. The result is your trip cost, which is more useful than the lowest displayed one-way fare.
For illustration, an invented $800 one-way seat fare costs $1,600 for two people or $6,400 for eight people before extras. These are arithmetic examples, not current offers. As the group grows, compare a whole-aircraft quote using the same airports and dates in our charter cost guide.
How does semi-private flying compare with first class and private charter?
Semi-private flying fits travelers who value the terminal and smaller-cabin experience but can accept a published schedule. Conventional airline first class and private charter solve different travel needs.
| Decision | Semi-private seat | Conventional airline first class | Whole-aircraft charter |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you buy | A seat on a shared service | A premium seat on a scheduled airline | Exclusive aircraft use for your group |
| Departure plan | Available routes and published times | The airline’s network and timetable | An itinerary requested and approved with the provider |
| Airport experience | May use a dedicated terminal or hangar | Usually the airport’s commercial terminal | Terminal arrangements agreed for the charter |
| Price basis | Per passenger | Per passenger | The aircraft and complete itinerary |
| Primary reason to compare | Simpler terminal access on a useful route | A convenient nonstop or onward itinerary | Privacy, group travel, or a tailored route |
An empty-leg flight is another category: a positioning opportunity tied to an aircraft’s other work. It is not simply another name for a scheduled semi-private seat. Our affordable private flights guide explains the compromises behind each option.
How do you find semi-private flights near you?
Search the actual origin, destination, date, and passenger count on the provider’s booking site, then verify the terminal at both ends. A city appearing on a route map does not establish a flight between every pair of destinations or on every date.
Airport codes matter. JSX’s Dallas page identifies Dallas Love Field (DAL) and its Lemmon Avenue facility. Its Miami page identifies Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport (OPF). Those are different airports from DFW and MIA, respectively, so compare the ground journey before booking. JSX ↗ JSX ↗
Aero’s destination directory includes places such as Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Aspen, and Los Cabos; use the live schedule to establish which services operate for your dates. Tradewind groups its scheduled offering into Northeast, Bahamas, and Caribbean travel. Aero ↗ Tradewind Aviation ↗
Start your search with JSX flight availability, Slate shared shuttle seats, Aero scheduled seats, or Tradewind scheduled service. For whole-aircraft airport planning, explore our city guides.
How early should you arrive for a JSX flight?
Follow the instructions for your booked airport and itinerary. JSX’s Dallas page lists domestic check-in at 20–30 minutes before departure and international check-in at 45 minutes; Miami also lists 20–30 minutes for domestic departures. JSX ↗ JSX ↗
Those times are provider guidance for the listed locations, not a universal rule for semi-private flying. Allow extra time for reaching an unfamiliar hangar, required documents, pets, or assistance arrangements. A dedicated terminal does not remove the need to follow the provider’s check-in and screening instructions.
Save the terminal address from your confirmation and share it with your driver. Check parking availability and price separately. When connecting to another airline, confirm whether the bookings include any connection protection and leave time for a terminal or airport transfer.
What should you check about bags, pets, and accessibility?
Confirm baggage limits, pet acceptance, and boarding assistance for the specific fare and aircraft before paying. Smaller cabins and a different terminal experience make these details especially useful to settle in advance.
- Baggage: JSX advertises up to three included checked bags, with weight and size restrictions. Verify your fare’s allowance and ask about golf clubs, skis, or other bulky items. JSX ↗
- Pets: JSX’s experience page describes dogs and cats traveling in the cabin. Check its current pet policy for eligibility, reservations, documents, and fees. JSX ↗
- Boarding and mobility: Describe the assistance or mobility device you need and ask how the actual aircraft will be boarded. Obtain confirmation rather than assuming the procedure is the same as a jet bridge.
- Children and seating: Ask about approved child restraints, family seating, and infant rules before selecting the fare.
Different providers have different allowances. Tradewind’s scheduled-service page lists 50 lb / 23 kg of total luggage per seated guest, including personal items. Do not carry one operator’s baggage assumptions into another booking. Tradewind Aviation ↗
How do you book a semi-private flight?
Book a semi-private seat by searching the published schedule and purchasing the available fare. You do not need to request a whole-aircraft charter quote unless exclusive use is what you want.
- Search both directions. Check the exact airports and dates, including a workable return.
- Price the full party. Search all travelers together; the lowest advertised fare may not be available for every seat you need.
- Read the fare conditions. Identify change fees, fare differences, cancellation deadlines, cash refunds versus credits, and any credit expiry.
- Confirm special requirements. Resolve bags, pets, seating, mobility assistance, and travel documents before payment.
- Save the travel instructions. Keep the confirmation, terminal address, check-in deadline, and provider contact details together.
Ask what happens if the flight is canceled and whether the provider offers another departure, a refund, or another remedy under the applicable terms. If arrival time is critical, identify a backup itinerary before committing.
When is semi-private flying the wrong choice?
Semi-private flying is a poor fit when you need exclusive cabin use, a custom departure, or a route outside the available network. An airline nonstop may also be more convenient once driving time, schedules, and connections are included.
For a large group, compare the total seat bill with an appropriate charter. For an inflexible meeting or event, examine the recovery options if the flight changes. For a solo traveler on a well-matched route, the simpler airport experience may be the feature that makes the fare worthwhile.
Our recommendation is to compare three complete journeys: the best available semi-private seat, a suitable conventional airline itinerary, and a private charter proposal if your budget and group size justify one. Choose the option that solves your trip’s actual problem.
Can credit card points help pay for this trip?
A seat purchase may be easier to cover with rewards than a whole aircraft, but eligibility still matters. Use our guide to booking private jet travel with credit card points.
Frequently asked questions
Is JSX a private jet charter?
JSX’s public-charter product sells individual seats on shared flights. Purchasing a seat does not give you exclusive use of the aircraft. A whole-aircraft private charter is a separate booking. JSX ↗
Do you need a membership to fly JSX?
JSX states that its by-the-seat service has no membership fee. Search for an available flight and compare the fare conditions for your dates. JSX ↗
Is Slate Aviation a semi-private flight option?
Yes. Slate markets by-the-seat shuttle travel, so you can purchase a seat on a shared flight. Its shuttle product is different from booking an entire aircraft. Confirm the current route, fare, and any membership conditions on its official booking site. Slate Aviation ↗
Are semi-private flights cheaper than private jet charter?
They can require much less cash for one or two travelers because you pay for seats rather than the whole aircraft. Compare complete trip totals; a large group buying many seats should also request a charter quote.
Is JSX cheaper than first class?
There is no universal answer. Compare the available JSX fare with a first-class itinerary for the same travelers and dates, including ground transport, baggage, return travel, and fare flexibility.
Do JSX flights use regular airport terminals?
JSX markets dedicated hangars and lounges. Use the exact terminal address in your flight instructions; choosing the right airport code alone does not guarantee your driver reaches the correct entrance. JSX ↗
Are all semi-private flights on jets?
No. Tradewind’s scheduled service uses Pilatus PC-12 turboprops. Semi-private describes the booking experience, so confirm the aircraft rather than assuming every service uses a jet. Tradewind Aviation ↗
Are semi-private flights the same as empty legs?
No. A published shared-seat flight and an aircraft positioning opportunity are different products. Compare the specific route, payment basis, and cancellation terms before booking.
Can you use credit card points for semi-private flights?
Possibly, through a supported booking or an eligible rewards redemption against the purchase. Eligibility depends on the card and transaction. Our credit card points guide explains the options; earning airline miles does not automatically let you redeem them for the same flight.
