These are starting points for a quote. Your operator must confirm the airport suits the aircraft and trip. FBO means fixed-base operator—the private aviation facility where you meet the aircraft.

Northeast

For Princeton and Dartmouth, start with the local airport before routing the trip through a major city. The onward drive can matter as much as the flight itself.

Princeton, New Jersey

Princeton University

Start with
Trenton–MercerTTN / KTTN

Keep in mindA New York airport makes more sense when your trip also includes New York.

Princeton lists TTN among its air-transport options, and Signature publishes private aviation services at the airport.

A Teterboro arrival may fit a trip that also includes Manhattan, but it should not become the default simply because it is a familiar private jet airport. Compare the complete itinerary using our Teterboro airport guide. Give the driver the tour meeting point and follow the university’s current visitor-parking instructions.

Hanover, New Hampshire

Dartmouth College

Start with
Lebanon MunicipalLEB / KLEB

Keep in mindReserve the car in advance; ride-hailing options are limited in the Upper Valley.

Dartmouth places LEB seven miles from campus and identifies general aviation services there. Its travel page describes Manchester as about 90 minutes south and Boston Logan as about 2.5 hours south; those are university planning references, not guaranteed transfers.

Book the car before the flight is finalized. Dartmouth warns that ride-hailing has a limited presence in the Upper Valley. Ask the operator about the proposed aircraft, arrival window and alternate plan; arrange the campus appointment with enough room for a change in the day’s travel.

Midwest & Texas

For a campus tour, choose around the meeting address. For a football weekend, add stadium access, aircraft parking and the return departure plan before selecting the airport.

Notre Dame, Indiana

University of Notre Dame

Start with
South Bend InternationalSBN / KSBN

Keep in mindConfirm game-day parking and leave time to reach the aircraft after the game.

The airport publishes a special-events page with Notre Dame game-day guidance and FBO contacts. It recommends contacting the FBO in advance to arrange parking and services.

Ask the provider to confirm the procedures for your date and whether the aircraft will remain at South Bend. Set a realistic departure window after the game, including the walk out of the stadium and the car transfer. A final whistle is not an aircraft departure time.

Columbus, Ohio

The Ohio State University

Start with
Ohio State University AirportOSU / KOSU
Also compare
John Glenn Columbus InternationalCMH / KCMH

Keep in mindConfirm the FBO, campus drop-off and any football-shuttle arrangements.

Its university FBO publishes handling information and a football-shuttle information page. Check the current offering directly before including a shuttle in your plans.

Compare OSU with John Glenn Columbus International (CMH) when the proposed aircraft or the rest of the family’s travel calls for another option. Our Columbus charter guide helps frame that airport comparison. Name the campus entrance or stadium pickup point in the ground-transfer booking.

Ann Arbor, Michigan

University of Michigan

Start with
Willow RunYIP / KYIP
Also compare
Detroit MetroDTW / KDTW

Keep in mindCompare the drive from the private terminal to your actual campus appointment.

The FAA identifies YIP as a general aviation airport in the Ypsilanti area serving business and air-taxi operations, with access to FBO facilities.

Compare Willow Run with Detroit Metro when the trip includes airline connections or a particular aircraft proposal. Ask for the drive from the actual private terminal to the University of Michigan appointment, not a generic Detroit arrival. Use our Detroit-area charter guide for the wider regional plan.

Austin, Texas

University of Texas at Austin

Start with
Austin ExecutiveEDC / KEDC
Also compare
Austin–Bergstrom InternationalAUS / KAUS

Keep in mindCompare both airports against your hotel, campus visit and return plans.

Austin Executive describes itself as a business and general aviation alternative to AUS, with access to the University of Texas and a published 6,025-foot runway. Runway length alone does not establish suitability for a particular flight.

Your hotel and the timing of the campus or stadium visit can change the preferred airport. Ask for the total flight proposal and transfer plan from each option. See our Austin private jet guide before choosing.

South

Southern campus trips work best when the provider has the precise destination and purpose of the visit. Miami makes that especially clear: its main campus and football stadium are in different cities.

Nashville, Tennessee

Vanderbilt University

Start with
John C. TuneJWN / KJWN
Also compare
Nashville InternationalBNA / KBNA

Keep in mindHave the provider compare the proposed aircraft and the complete ground journey.

The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority publishes JWN’s FBO details and describes its runway extension to 6,000 feet. Have the operator confirm the actual aircraft and trip requirements.

Ask which arrival works for the campus appointment and your overnight address. If family members arrive separately, include their travel in the transfer plan. Our Nashville charter guide covers the regional airport decision.

Durham, North Carolina

Duke University

Start with
Raleigh–Durham InternationalRDU / KRDU

Keep in mindInclude any UNC or NC State visits in the same ground-transfer plan.

Duke’s visitor guidance directs arrivals from RDU, while Signature publishes private aviation handling at the airport.

Specify whether the visit is to West Campus, East Campus or a medical appointment. If you also plan to visit UNC–Chapel Hill or NC State, compare one RDU arrival with a driver covering the local visits. The Raleigh charter guide provides regional planning context.

Charlottesville, Virginia

University of Virginia

Start with
Charlottesville–AlbemarleCHO / KCHO

Keep in mindStart with the local airport and your exact campus meeting point.

UVA describes CHO as approximately 20 minutes from the university, and the airport lists Signature’s corporate and general aviation services. The university’s approximate drive time is a planning reference; confirm the route from the FBO to your exact destination.

Give the driver the tour meeting point or event entrance. If a proposal uses an airport farther away, ask what advantage it offers in aircraft availability, operational fit or total trip cost, then compare that advantage with the additional ground travel.

Coral Gables, Florida

University of Miami

Start with
Miami ExecutiveTMB / KTMB
Also compare
Miami–Opa Locka ExecutiveOPF / KOPF

Keep in mindThe Coral Gables campus and Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens are separate destinations.

Miami-Dade Aviation lists business aviation and FBO facilities at both airports. TMB belongs in the comparison for a Coral Gables campus trip; OPF deserves attention when the visit centers on Miami Gardens.

The Hurricanes play football at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, not at the main Coral Gables campus. Confirm whether the car is taking you to class, a residence hall or the game. Our Miami airport comparison and Opa-locka airport guide explain the regional choices.

California

For California college visits, compare a suitable aircraft arrival with the road journey. A nearby runway and a familiar airport name each tell only part of the story.

Stanford, California

Stanford University

Start with
San José Mineta InternationalSJC / KSJC

Keep in mindNearby Palo Alto has a short runway. Ask the operator to confirm aircraft suitability.

SJC publishes FBO options for general aviation. Nearby Palo Alto Airport (PAO) has a published runway length of only 2,443 feet, according to Stanford Flying Club.

Our planning recommendation is to compare a confirmed SJC proposal before assuming that proximity makes PAO suitable. The operating carrier must assess the aircraft, payload, weather and operating requirements. Use the San José charter guide and Bay Area airport guide when the visit also includes business meetings.

Los Angeles, California

University of Southern California

Start with
Hollywood BurbankBUR / KBUR
Also compare
Van NuysVNY / KVNY

Keep in mindCompare the drive to the correct USC campus at your intended arrival time.

The FAA describes BUR as a mixed-use airport and identifies Van Nuys as a nearby general aviation airport. The preferred arrival depends on the operating proposal and the trip across Los Angeles.

Specify the University Park Campus, Health Sciences Campus or another actual destination. Have the car provider compare routes at the intended arrival time, including any game or event access restrictions. Our Los Angeles charter guide and Van Nuys airport guide help you compare the options.

What changes for move-in, family weekend and football?

The purpose of the college visit changes the aircraft and ground arrangements. Tell the provider what the group will carry, when everyone must be on campus and how firm the return time is.

College-trip details that change the travel plan
TripDetail to arrange before booking
Admissions tour or interview
Reserve the campus appointment first, then plan the arrival with time for the transfer and check-in.
Move-in or move-out
Send baggage counts, dimensions and unusual items. Confirm both aircraft storage and a vehicle that can carry the group and its belongings.
Family weekend or commencement
Confirm the hotel, event schedule, campus vehicle access and whether different relatives leave at different times.
Football or another major game
Confirm current FBO parking, event procedures, stadium pickup arrangements and an achievable return window.

Ask the operator to review bags against the actual aircraft, not only the advertised seat count. If the group includes children, pets or a traveler with mobility needs, raise those requirements before accepting the proposal. Our first private flight guide explains what to expect at the private terminal.

Can one private flight trip cover several college visits?

Yes, a multi-stop charter can connect college visits, but nearby campuses may be better combined by road. Build the schedule around confirmed admissions appointments and compare the entire itinerary before booking individual legs.

Illustrative college-tour plans, not confirmed schedules
Example itineraryHow to compare it
Duke, UNC–Chapel Hill and NC State
Ask about one RDU arrival with a driver for the Triangle visits.
Princeton plus New York meetings
Compare a TTN campus arrival with a New York-area arrival and the additional ground journey.
Stanford plus Bay Area meetings
Choose the airport and hotel around all addresses, rather than adding a flight for every stop.
Notre Dame and Ohio State
Quote the complete sequence, including time on campus, aircraft waiting or repositioning, and the final trip home.

Ask whether the same aircraft stays with the group, what happens if a tour runs late and whether an added overnight changes the quote. Read the private jet booking checklist before agreeing to a tightly timed itinerary.

How much does a private jet college visit cost?

A college visit has no fixed charter price. The route, dates, aircraft, passenger and baggage load, and return arrangements determine the proposal. Compare the whole-aircraft trip total and its inclusions, rather than an hourly headline or a per-seat illustration.

  • Aircraft fit: ask which cabin and baggage capacity suit the actual group, including any bags returning with a student.
  • Return plan: compare a waiting aircraft, an overnight stay and separate flights when relevant; request the assumptions in writing.
  • Total charges: ask which positioning, handling, parking, crew, tax and potential weather-related charges are included or payable separately.
  • Changes: confirm the cost of a late departure, itinerary change, cancellation or replacement aircraft.

Use our charter cost guide and charter fee checklist to compare proposals. The aircraft directory helps you discuss cabin options; it does not establish that a particular aircraft is available for your trip.

Plan your college flight

Start with the campus appointment and work backward to the flight. A useful request gives the provider enough detail to compare suitable airports and aircraft together.

  1. Name the college and exact destination. Include the appointment, event or move-in time, plus the hotel if relevant.
  2. Give your departure city and dates. Include every stop and a realistic return window.
  3. Describe the group. Include passenger count, baggage, pets and any accessibility or child-seat needs.
  4. Compare the full proposal. Confirm the airport, FBO, operating carrier, aircraft, all-in cost and change terms before paying.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a jet membership to visit a college by private aircraft?

You can request an on-demand charter for a single visit. If you expect repeated trips, compare the actual routes and dates with a jet card or membership’s costs and terms. Compare jet cards and on-demand charter.

Can a student fly privately without a parent?

Ask the provider about the student’s age, the operator’s policy, identification, consent requirements and who will meet the student at each end. Do not assume an airline’s unaccompanied-minor service exists on a charter.

Can you use an empty leg for a campus visit?

An empty leg may suit a flexible visit, but the flight depends on another itinerary and can change or disappear. Have a workable backup for a fixed interview, move-in appointment or graduation. Read how empty legs work.

Does an international arrival change the airport choice?

It can. Ask the operator to confirm the arrival airport’s customs arrangements for your date and aircraft, any required advance coordination, and whether a separate clearance stop is needed. An airport’s name alone does not confirm clearance for your flight.
