What should you confirm before your first private jet flight?

Get a written flight brief that covers where to go, when to arrive, who to contact, and what you can bring. If a friend or colleague invited you, ask that person for the confirmed guest instructions. If you booked the aircraft, resolve these details with your charter contact.

Where do you go, and how early should you arrive?

Go to the specific private terminal or FBO on your itinerary and meet the arrival time your operator or host gives you. An FBO is a fixed-base operator: a business providing services for private aviation, often including the passenger terminal. Air Charter Service describes waiting at the FBO and being escorted to the aircraft. Air Charter Service ↗

Save the street address, terminal name, contact number, and aircraft registration if supplied. Share the actual address with your driver; an airport name alone may lead to the wrong entrance. Add a road-traffic buffer instead of relying on someone else’s claim that five minutes before takeoff is enough.

  1. Check in with the reception desk or the named contact. Give your name and the flight or host’s name.
  2. Have your documents ready and ask where to wait. Tell staff it is your first private flight if you would like a walkthrough.
  3. Let staff direct baggage handling and accompany you to the aircraft. Ask before walking onto the apron or arranging a photograph there.

For a New York departure, our Teterboro guide helps explain why the airport and the particular terminal are separate details.

Do you still need ID and security checks?

Bring the identification your operating carrier confirms for your flight. A private-terminal departure does not mean you can skip passenger documentation or assume every flight uses the same security process.

For U.S. travel, ask specifically which documents are accepted and whether your state-issued ID must be REAL ID compliant. TSA publishes its accepted identification for TSA checkpoints; ask your carrier how the applicable requirements are handled on your itinerary. Do not assume a photo on your phone will replace the required document. Transportation Security Administration ↗

What should you pack and wear?

Pack for the aircraft your group is actually using, and choose clothes that suit your host and the purpose of the trip. Our practical default is neat, comfortable clothing, an extra layer, and shoes you can confidently use on boarding steps.

  • Confirm bag fit. Send dimensions and weights for large suitcases, golf clubs, skis, or strollers. Soft-sided luggage is worth asking about, but it is not permission to bring extra weight.
  • Keep essentials accessible. Ask where a small bag with documents, medication, and necessary personal items should be stowed. Do not assume you can reach the luggage compartment during flight.
  • Discuss unusual items. Check batteries, mobility equipment, and other restricted items with the operator before packing; private aviation is not an exemption from hazardous-material rules.
  • Match the occasion. Ask your host whether the trip is casual or business dress. Expensive clothing is not part of our recommended preparation.

Aircraft selection and baggage needs belong in the same conversation; ACS specifically asks about equipment such as skis and bicycles. The FAA also directs travelers to its PackSafe guidance for hazardous materials. Air Charter Service ↗ Federal Aviation Administration ↗

Who boards first, and where should you sit?

Follow the crew’s boarding direction, then ask where you should sit. As a guest, let your host express a preference within the crew’s seating instructions. There is no need to guess which chair is the “owner’s seat.”

Take your time on the stairs and mention any assistance you need before boarding. Do not rearrange baggage or seating without checking. Once seated, put away distractions and listen to the briefing, even if the rest of the group has heard it before.

The FAA advises passengers to review the safety card, listen to the briefing, locate exits, and ask about unclear instructions. Ask the crew to show you the seat belt and any unfamiliar cabin controls. Follow their instructions about remaining seated, stowing belongings, and using devices. Federal Aviation Administration ↗

What should you expect inside the cabin?

Confirm the amenities on your particular aircraft rather than assuming a private jet includes a full meal, fast internet, or a flight attendant. Before departure, ask who handles requests in the cabin and when it is appropriate to ask for help.

Cabin details to ask about before settling in
Cabin detailUseful first-flight question
Food and drinkWhat is stocked, what has been ordered, and have dietary needs been confirmed?
BathroomIs there a fully enclosed lavatory, and can you show me how it works?
ConnectivityIs Wi-Fi available on this flight, and is there a charge or usage limit?
ComfortHow do I adjust my seat or temperature, and which settings are required for takeoff?

Yes, you can use the bathroom when the crew says it is safe to move around. Asking how a fitted lavatory works is entirely reasonable. If privacy, mobility, or a medical need matters, discuss the actual cabin layout before accepting the aircraft; do not plan around an online joke that passengers should never use the toilet.

For example, NetJets describes coordinating dining and ground transport through its service team. That supports asking ahead, but it does not establish what another provider includes. NetJets ↗

How can you be a considerate guest?

Be punctual, communicate your needs early, and respect your host’s privacy. Our suggested approach is to treat the cabin as a shared space and let the crew manage the flight.

  • Ask before adding a traveler, bringing a pet, or requesting a change to the planned journey.
  • Check with your host before ordering extras that could be charged to their account.
  • Ask permission before photographing people or sharing the trip publicly. Leave travel documents and private conversations out of posts.
  • Use headphones and keep calls or videos considerate of the people around you.
  • Follow instructions about food, drinks, smoking, and devices; keep the cabin tidy and thank the people helping you.

Traveling with a child or a pet? Arrange seating, restraints, assistance, and any paperwork with the operator beforehand. Our guide to flying private with a large dog provides a separate planning checklist.

Do you tip private jet pilots or the crew?

Ask about the operator’s gratuity policy, and coordinate with your host if you are their guest. Our recommendation is to resolve the question discreetly before the trip rather than calculate a restaurant-style percentage of the charter bill.

Ask whether gratuities are permitted, already arranged, or handled through a particular process. You can also ask how to recognize ground staff who help with your bags. If a tip is appropriate, agree who is handling it. If staff decline, thank them without pressing. A thoughtful thank-you to your host is separate from a crew gratuity.

We do not recommend one universal dollar amount: the useful answer is the policy and arrangement for your actual flight.

What changes when you fly internationally?

A private aircraft does not remove passport, entry, or customs requirements. Confirm the documents for every traveler and have the operator explain where arrival processing will happen.

CBP states that U.S. citizens, including children, generally need a valid U.S. passport for international air travel. Other nationalities and destinations have their own requirements; confirm visas, entry permissions, and any documents for a child traveling without both parents. U.S. Customs and Border Protection ↗

CBP’s general aviation guidance covers private and non-scheduled commercial aircraft. Your operator should coordinate the applicable U.S. arrival process. Follow the crew’s instructions after landing; do not assume you can walk straight to your car or that border officers always board the aircraft. U.S. Customs and Border Protection ↗

A simple message to send your host

A short message can settle the main details without turning your first flight into a project. Adapt this example to the arrangements your host has already shared:

Thank you again for inviting me. Could you send the exact terminal address and the time you would like me there? I plan to bring one small bag; please let me know the baggage limits and any ID details I should provide. It is my first private flight, so I would appreciate any instructions from the crew. Is there anything you would like us to coordinate beforehand?

For your own charter, send the checklist above to the booking contact instead. Compare cabin layouts in our private jet types guide before choosing an aircraft around photographs alone.

Frequently asked questions

How early should you arrive for a private jet flight?

Use the arrival time specified by your operating carrier or host, and allow a separate buffer for your drive. Ask for a check-in time at the named terminal, not just the planned takeoff time. There is no single timing rule for every private flight.

Is there a dress code on a private jet?

Ask your host or operator about any requirements. Our recommendation is comfortable, neat clothing that suits the trip, with shoes suitable for boarding steps. A business visit and a family holiday may call for different choices.

Can you use the bathroom on a private jet?

Ask about the lavatory on the offered aircraft and use it when the crew says it is safe to leave your seat. Have the crew explain unfamiliar controls. Discuss privacy or accessibility needs before the flight.

Should a guest tip the private jet pilots?

Coordinate with your host and ask about the operator’s gratuity policy. Do not assume that a guest must independently tip, or that a percentage of the flight price is expected.

Can you take photos on a private jet?

Ask your host and crew first, particularly before photographing other people or posting publicly. On the apron, follow staff directions and ask where it is safe to stand for a picture.

Can you tell the pilot it is your first private flight?

Yes. Introduce yourself and say so. Ask for a walkthrough of boarding, your seat, the safety briefing, and the bathroom controls. Raise nonurgent questions when the crew has time to answer.
